A privately-held company formed in 2008, Keller Medical, Inc. manufactures and distributes the Keller Funnel™, a delivery device designed to facilitate the placement of silicone gel implants during breast augmentation procedures. The hydrophilically coated, cone-shaped device was created by Dr. Keller in direct response to the reintroduction of silicone gel implants into the marketplace. Nearly a generation of new surgeons never worked with silicone implants while the FDA conducted its 14 year efficacy study.   The Funnel allows surgeons to maintain smaller incisions, reduce patient trauma and physician fatigue. Most importantly, surgeons can now employ a no-touch technique which may reduce incidence of capsular contracture, a painful and prevalent side effect of breast augmentation procedures.  To date, more than 800 plastic surgeons have adopted the use of the Keller Funnel™.

 

Initial sales of the Keller Funnel™ started in September 2009, with exponential growth occurring each quarter thereafter.  By April 2011, nearly 20% of all gel procedures performed in the U.S. are completed using the Keller Funnel™. Keller Medical, Inc. has expanded sales into Japan, Korea, Singapore, Canada and recently received its CE mark for distribution in the EU.

 

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery:

• In 2010, 285,000 breast augmentation surgeries were performed in the United States 
• Today more than 50% of all breast augmentation procedures use silicone gel implants
• There are approximately 6,000 board certified plastic surgeons who perform breast augmentation in the U.S.
• The use of saline implants declined from 139K in ’09 to 116K in 2010
• The use of silicone gel implants grew from 137K in ’09 to 145K in 2010 

All surgeons who use the Keller Funnel™ are required to view a product training video and pass a certification exam.
